RWD HITS THE NBA GLOBAL GAME IN MANCHESTER WITH SPRITE
Tego Sigel checks out Oklahoma City Thunder Vs Philadelphia 76ers at the Phones 4U Arena in Manchester...
The first time an NBA game has ever been played in Manchester, Sprite, who have been the official Soft Drink of the NBA since 1994 and globally since 2011, invited RWD to watchOklahoma City Thunder take on Philadelphia 76ers at the Phones 4U Arena. Taking in one of the 2013/14 season’s most anticipated stars and RWD favourite Kevin Durant, the pre-season game gave fans in the UK the opportunity to witness the game first-hand as the culture of Basketball sees a marked and rapid growth on these shores.
With the likes of Rio Ferdinand, David de Gea, Adnan Januzaj, Jack Rodwell and Fabrice Muamba in attendance, it was NBA legends John Amaechi and Dikembe Mutombo who welcome fans to the North West ahead of the game.
With Durant in sparking form (collecting 21 points, 12 assists and eight rebounds), the hotly contested pre-season clash offered an incredible taste of the game and in particular the NBA’s immersing, fan-friendly presentation, with hosts, cheerleaders, performers and highlight packages keeping fans entertained throughout.
Legends and players from the Oklahoma City Thunder and Philadelphia 76ers took part in a unique basketball event as part of the NBA Cares community programme just days before. Working in partnership with the Special Olympics, workshops and once in a lifetime coaching opportunities were set-up to maximise the NBA’s presence on their Manchester jaunt.
Running out 103-99 winners on the day, Oklahoma City Thunder are showing signs of being legitimate title contenders this season while the 76ers, who were without their traded first round draft-pick Nerlens Noel, will view the game as the perfect test as they continue their preparations for the year ahead.
Next year’s NBA Global Games will see the Brooklyn Nets play the Atlanta Hawks at The O2, London on January 16.
